to be on the safe side, save the file to a new file name periodically (whenever you start to get nervous about how much work you might lose if the file goes belly up). For example, say you start out with a file called MyBook1.doc. Three days from now when you have 6K words written, do a Save As and call it MyBook2.doc. Repeat this process every few days.

Better yet, save off a new file every day, using the date in the file name.

That works for me, anyway.
