Tough one. In the past I was always very open, even confrontational, "I'm a witch, so what?" I sometimes use "Wiccan" because people these days know the word, even if it's only from movies and TV.

I run into this a lot. The second that someone with exposure to alternative religions hears that word "witch", they say, "Oh, my sister's boyfriend's cousin is a Wiccan." Then, I'm left trying to explain the difference between "Wiccan", "Pagan", and "Witch", and why I am only two of the three. OTOH, I once had a friend ask me about the difference in a non-confrontational way, and it helped me get things organized in my head to talk about the differences.

I was even very political, and thought we should be more open, make people understand our path, etc. Now, I'm much more conservative. I'm even beginning to understand why some groups stay underground even from other Pagans. I understand the whole hiding to keep things alive thing.

I don't look for ways to bring it up, but I don't avoid it either. I don't like people pushing their religion on me, so I try to avoid doing it to others. If I were living in a more conservative area, I might be a little more closed mouth.
