This play was ridiculous, and is fully a result of the goaltender having to wait for the puck to enter it.

FWIW, I would keep the trapezoid only as a protected area in which 'goaltender interference' may be assessed like it may be in the crease. Outside these spaces, a goaltender playing the puck may be 'hit' i.e. only standard interference still applies.

Or just stay in your crease and acknowledge that sometimes the other team is going to get to the puck first.
