I have been hearing the term *triple witching* on CNBC this morning. Can someone explain exactly what this means?

They are referring to *Triple Witching Friday*!

Thank you,
Ellen

From http://www.investorwords.com

"triple witching hour

The final hour of the stock market trading session on the third Friday of March, June, September, and December, when option contracts and futures contracts expire on market indexes used by program traders. The simultaneous expirations often set off heavy trading of options, futures and the underlying stocks. see also double witching hour."

Basically, every month on the third Friday stock options and index options expire (a double witching). In March, June, September and December index futures contracts also expire on the same day, adding a third 'witch.'

Regards,

Creighton
