only minor (medal count) spoilers, at the very end of this post

When I was doing internet consulting in the mid-to-late 90's, one customer I worked with used this acronym to describe their main goal in every market they entered, TWD. It means Total World Domination. I thought of this earlier in the week, for the first time during these Olympics, when the US swept the men's 400m final. And, subsequently, almost every day since given the results this year in Athens.

Now, there are some countries which have larger populations that we, others that focus only on certain events in the games at all, but OVERALL (historically, & especially this summer) the US has dominated swimming and track & field (actually, mostly just the sprints & relays, and jumping field events). This summer, in addition to our "sweet spots", we also had impressive performances in gymnastics, road cycling, equestrian, various boat oriented events, and wrestling (though our traditional success in men's basketball, boxing, and diving did wane).

* In swimming, US men took 9 of the 16 gold medals and more silver & more bronze than any other country, finishing with 18 medals overall. The US ladies didn't do quite as well, though they did finish with more silver & 5 more total medals than any other country. Combined, our athletes were awarded with 28 total medals, almost twice the fifteen total medals that second place Australia earned.

* In track & field, besides sweeping the men's 400m & 200m events, our men have earned 18 total medals (more than three times the next best country) while the women won 2 of each type, meaning the US brought home 2 more gold, 4 more silver, and 4 more total medals than second place Russia (or any other country) with 24. The last events at any Olympic Stadium (save the men's marathon;-) always underscores our track & field dominance: the men's & women's 4x400m relays are rarely won by any other country and our teams usually win by staggering margins.

* In gymnastics, besides taking the silver medals in both the men's & women's team competitions and both individual all around medals as well, we finished only one medal behind the 1st place Romanian team in total medals and our 9 medals were more than twice the number earned by the 3rd place Japanese team.

* In other events, the US brought home the most (by 2) medals of any other country in equestrian (none gold), the second most medals in wrestling (one gold), the third most medals in TaekWondo (one gold), & we earned more medals in Road Cycling (one gold) than any other country too.

* Other standout results include the women's team gold medals in basketball & football (soccer), our ladies complete domination in softball (only one run scored against them!), and 1st & 3rds in both Beach Volleyball & Fencing.

In total, the United States earned more gold medals than any other country, more silver medals than any other country, and the second highest number of bronze medals (behind Russia), for the highest total number of medals with 102 (10 more than 2nd place Russian and 40 more than 3rd place China, a country with 4 times our population - with only a couple of events left to be decided & tallied at the time of this post).

TWD? We report, you decide. And though it's probably not P.C. (who cares!), results like these can make one proud to be an American whether we had anything to do with it or not;-)
