Conventions may have changed since I left acadmeia some 15 years ago. But back then, it was understood that publications fullfilled two roles. The first was to satisfy a grasnting agencies need to see product, and the second was to get employment for senior graduate students and postdocs. At that time, the senior grad student's (or postdoc's) name went first, the funded professor went last, and the peons went between.

Tenured faculty who put their own names first were viewed as shorting their students.
