Update on the story: It is purple sweet potato harvest time. Hooray! I hope my co-worker whose daughter married the farmer will bring in the culls like she did last year. The small individual sized potatoes were great. I think it should be a good crop this year.

A cooking tip from the farmer's wife is to substitute purple sweet potato for recipes asking for carrots.
