EU Presses Nations on Open Skies Deal
EU Presses Member Governments to Renounce Their Air Treaties With the U.S.

The Associated Press

BRUSSELS, Belgium July 20, 2004 — The European Union pressed member governments Tuesday to renounce their air treaties with the United States, apparently aiming to pressure them to accept a broader deal the union negotiated with Washington.

Although many smaller countries backed the commission, Britain, which doesn't have its own "open skies" treaty with Washington, has been seen as leading the opposition. London's Heathrow is Europe's busiest airport, and a deal could force the dominant carrier, British Airways, to cede space to rivals not only from the United States but other EU countries.

Fortress Heathrow is going to have to open its gates.
