United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX - news) is nearing an agreement to buy Honeywell International Inc. (NYSE:HON - news) for about $40 billion, business television station CNBC reported.

Such a deal would combine two manufacturing giants, each with a broad range of products but also many areas of overlap. Honeywell is still in the process of integrating the old Honeywell and AlliedSignal, which merged late last year in a $16 billion deal.

CNBC cited unnamed people close to the companies in its report, and said both boards are expected to vote on a possible deal this weekend. United Technologies will likely use its shares as currency for a ``significant premium' over Honeywell's stock price, CNBC said.
