On the way to work last Thursday, I saw three vacuum cleaners in various trash cans/piles. They were all upright models.

-Did something happen last week to cause marginally useful vacuum cleaners to fail completely?
-Did something happen last week to remind people to throw away broken vacuum cleaners that they'd been hanging onto?
-What breaks on most vacuum cleaners? I was wondering if I picked up all three, would it be likely to make one or two useful appliances, assuming it's not always the same thing that breaks.
