Vanguard has a much better website, and it's easier to manage your funds there directly than to have Scottrade act as intermediary- trust me, I do it both ways.
Well, not sure I'd agree with the "much better" statement. Granted, they keep trying to tweak on it, but I think it could be designed much better.
Also, I was disappointed that their site couldn't handle exchanging my HiYield holding to Cap Opp. It didn't have the ability to discern that I was already a holder of Cap Opp and forced me to call-in the order which still got botched - though they self-corrected two days later (by the time I received the mailed confirmation which showed the error).

The OP should keep in mind that if they decide to purchase through ScotTrade, they still have access to Vanguard website's content other than account maintenance.

However, I'd recommend Scottrade simply because you're not restricted to Vangaurd funds.
Agreed. Also, the transaction costs are much cheaper if one wishes to buy stocks and ETF's to hold in their IRA(s).
If the OP only wants VG funds, they could accrue them at ScotTrade until they exceed VG's minimums for acct fees, then transfer them to VG.

~ has accts at both VG and ScotTrade
