Very interesting dialogue. One of my professors/mentors offered the following brief outline for negotiating salary:
1. Negotiate to have them make an offer first (w/o disclosing current salary).
2. If you have to offer a number, don't give them current salary, but rather suggest that you would need $X (current salary * 1.20 or 1.25). Of course, if you are attempting to move to a job far different from the current, then differences would need to be factored accordingly.
3. If company balks at the number, then you can simply say that you must have misunderstood the job responsibilities and that you were hoping for a more expanded role with additional responsibilities. This way, your approaching the salary topic from a job responsibilitiy/skill set baseline, rather than simply arguing over a number. A subset to this approach is to negotiated a six-month review after accepting the lower initial salary, where both parties will reconvene to discuss your contribution and reevaluate the salary for upward revision. At least this is showing an enterprising attitude and good faith on your behalf.
4. You must be prepared to walk. If the company appears to be unreasonable or unprofessional in their treatment of your skills and prior experience, chances are they are not worth working for in the long-run anyway.
