Dashi is a soup base normally either comes in tea bag forms or a powder form. Japanese soup base is normally with either fish ( dried bonito or dried anchovies) or sea weed base. Then thefancy version might include shiitake mushrooms and others I can't think of at this minute.

One of my favorite is (that is if you have a time) is starting from scratch with Kombu seaweed , dried anchovies and shiitake mushroom to prepare the soup base in boiling water for maybe five minutes.
