I once watched an interview with a female financier that changed my life. She made her living financing startup businesses. Before she'd invest she'd spend a LOT of time with her proposed partner(s).

The one thing she said that's stuck with me was her admonition to listen to what people say about what they did / didn't do to others in their past. If they are capable of doing that to someone else, they are capable of doing it to you.

I think that advice has saved me a lot of grief over the years.
