VMC – Vulcan!
Not logical Mr. Spock –
Roman God of Fire!

Far beneath the vale,
Brow-sweat cooling molten iron,
Tireless Vulcan works.

Sparks fly, swords and spears,
Armor of gold and silver,
Mighty Vulcan works.

Son of Jupiter,
Raised by sea-nymph Thetis,
Bested Great Juno.

Hammer shapes Iron,
And Great Jupiter’s thunderbolts,
On Vulcan’s Anvil.

Husband of Venus,
Creator of Pandora –
Foolish Mankind’s Bane.

Fire and Iron and Rage --
Fell Warriors and Fair Gods
Alike know Vulcan.

Now let me digress –
An unfortunate habit –
And speak of quarries.

Not easy to build!
One quarry is a large moat;
VMC has scores!

Old quarries are deep,
Fathoms of water, no beach,
Unknown depths, still, cold . . .

On warm summer nights,
Young lovers swim ‘neath the moon,
Fear fueling Desire.

Quarries hold secrets,
Hidden depths, tender moments,
Generations share.

Haiku knew a quarry,
Long ago and far away;
We all have such times.

So Haiku will buy
For the moat and memories,
Below thirty-five.

Captain Haiku
