W-CDMA only exists on paper and in some labs, but hasn't even made it to any form of 'realistic' testing. CDMA2000 1x on the other hand is ready to go.

But, you wanted to hear from a QCOM bear. Late last year and early this year I felt that the price of QCOM was getting ahead of itself. Other than that, I can't really bring up any reasonable arguments against Qualcomm in the long term.

The expiration of patents in 7 years is something to worry about. Sure, Qualcomm has tons of patents which won't expire for some time after that, but it might cost some money to try to enforce their IPR. Many competitiors who originally disputed Qualcomm's claims will start to claim that Qualcomm's IPR expired with those very same patents around 2007 which they will claim contains all essential IPR for CDMA and any flavors thereof.

From Qualcomm's point of view there is no difference between CDMA2000 and W-CDMA except for the fact that CDMA2000 is about 1.5 years ahead of W-CDMA. Dr. Jacobs is right to worry that W-CDMA could delay 3G.
