WASHINGTON -- House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) urged the president on Sunday to drop his resistance to the idea and simply bypass the upcoming debate over raising the debt ceiling by deeming the entire cap unconstitutional.

Luckily, even Obama sees the danger in that thought.

Danger?

Pelosi is right.

Section 4 of the 14th Amendment says:

The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned...

Congress has the power of the purse, but it does not have the authority to refuse to pay for things it has previously authorized, debt limit or not.
