We are not retired yet, but plan to stay in our current location indefinitely. But where we are is not generally considered a typical retirement area.

House is large enough to not get claustrophobic during the winter. Large shop (in-floor heat) for projects.

Lots of people in our area ski well into their 60's; 70's is not unusual. Cross-country and snow-shoeing popular for those who don't downhill.

Between Jackson (WY) and us, we've got some impressive orthopedic surgeons (lots of practice) and world-class emergency doctors (one guy spends several months each year at the base camp of Everest (?) treating climbers). For more "normal" stuff, we were very impressed with the county hospital (one county over) last spring--excellent care and almost no infection rate. We don't wait for care, and the medical personnel listen to what you say. Life-flight helicopter lives at our airport.

Our local grocery store is clean and very well-stocked: deli, sushi, huge assortment of cheeses, fruits & vegetables (including organic), etc. Tables, chairs, and wi-fi in an upstairs area if you want to wait for someone or meet with someone.

Plenty of retirees during the summer. All kinds of hiking, climbing, floating the river, farmers' markets, open-air concerts....

Great restaurants, including Mexican (several varieties), Korean, and two Thai places. Award-winning vodka distillery and brewery.

As others have said, it all depends what you are looking for. But where you will find those things might surprise you.
