We had the great good fortune to join in a progressive New Year's Eve dinner with a few of our neighbors soon after we moved into this neighborhood almost thirty years ago, and it's still going strong. There are only four or five families left anymore, so we don't move from one house to another for appetizers, entrees, dessert, and champagne at midnight like we used to. We do the whole thing at one house, and I'm delighted to say it's our turn to host this year. No one's kids come anymore, since they've all grown up and moved on. People are threatening to go home at 10 or 11 pm, since midnight is just so damn late, but not if I can help it. And as far as I'm concerned, my neighbors either have to move out of the neighborhood or die to get out of this party. Otherwise, I'm coming for them as long as I'm able.
