We know the day will come when we exhaust our supply, so it makes little sense to export a finite resource.

I doubt the world will ever run out of petrochemicals. Above $100 it becomes economical the produce oil from coal (CTL, coal to liquids). The ocean floor has enormous amounts of methane clathrates.

Recoverable assets in shale country continue to grow with improved technology.

From 2015:
In the case of the Eagle Ford region, one of the most prolific in North America, rigs are producing at a rate 18 times more efficiently than they were in 2008, and 65% more efficiently than they were in 2013. Technology is whitewashing old school rules. In many ways, Moore's Law has finally arrived in the oil patch.

From 2018:
Devon estimates its drilling and construction costs per well are down 40% since 2014, and it has improved its initial production rates, a key metric in determining how much oil a well will produce, by 450% since 2012.

And this month:
Yet, using theoretical calculations, the researchers found that injection of a low-density gas for soak times of two months or more could have massive recovery gains, even when accounting for the downtime. For example, researchers calculated that recovery in a single well could be doubled or tripled using longer soaking periods.
