We made a direct donation in 2007 of $2,000 from my wife's IRA to a church we go to. My understanding is that we owe no tax on that and that it appies to the MRD from the IRA. Am I also correct that we cannot take any deduction for the donation

Yes. (I'm assuming your wife was at least 70 1/2 in 2007.)
