...we tried negotiations (which cc companies wouldn't even consider), CCCS (who told us we were hopeless and they wouldn't assist us at all), and more loans (fell through). Anyone who says that cc companies will take whatever you pay them never dealt with the companies I had -- they would actually send my checks back because they weren't the amount due. Can you believe that? When that happened, we basically said, "screw it"

I can relate to that paragraph about the companies not willing to help...I've tried to speak with my mortgage company about options and they told me they won't do anything for me until I stop making my payments - ie I have to be delinquent before they will negotiate.
This makes no sense when someone is trying to reach out and discuss options before things get bad. It seems like you have to destroy your morale and credit before anyone will take you serious.
