Well, I just put it back the way I found it. I'll work on it some weekend or another sometime.

Given that you said the switch box is located in an inconvenient spot (across the basement), I'm thinking a motion sensing switch might be out of range for where you want the activation to take place. You might consider installing a three-way switch circuit for the lights, or run a remote motion sensor to the location where you want the activation to occur. Just pay attention to the load and the ratings of the sensor you install.
