Well retirement assets are owned by an individual -- there are no joint retirement accounts.

All well and true but for a couple who deal with finances as one pot - they are joint. Or my husband has a big pot of retirement money but then has no house according to the way the trust is set up. And no car according to the titles.

It would have been detrimental financially to do anything equally when the job benefits were different.
