Well, the way I look at it, the late fee is really just another charge on your account. If you pay the late fee late, I don't see why they shouldn't charge you another $25. What you should have done was dispute the second late fee as a billing error, which would have halted interest and fee charges on it. (If it was later found to be in compliance with your agreement, you would just owe interest + principal on it.) Oh well, too late for that now.

What to do? I really don't know. If you can't come to an agreement with the original creditor, I suggest you try and reach a settlement with the collection agency for maybe $75 or so. (Offer $50 and see what happens.) Maybe you can get them to agree to remove the item from your credit report too. Whatever you do, get any agreement in writing before you send a single dime, no matter what they say.
