We're saving up to buy a house in cash up in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan - we love the cold and winter and snow and the cost of living is very cheap compared to our current city of Baltimore. My only concern about the UP is the short growing season, because I'd love to have a garden.

Congratulations on the move to retirement! For a garden, it really depends on where you are in the UP. If you are inland, you may have a relatively short, but hot, summer. Full of mosquitoes, but you knew that. If you have property on one of the shores, your summers will be short and cool.

On Sunday (July 6), it was 53 degrees and foggy at my parents' house. Inland a bit, it was 85 and sunny.

ThyPeace, grew up wearing a jacket every. single. day.

p.s. As a kid, I spent a lot of time in Door County. My very most favorite spot is Rock Island. For those who have not been there, it is a small island that can only be reached by two ferries from the mainland. It is a wonderfully peaceful spot, and a great place to be stormed in by a Lake Michigan summer storm. Unlike Naubinway, Michigan, which was dreadful (but I was coming down with mono at the time, so I may be biased; the people there were really nice).
