What does the asterick (*) on either side of a word refer to on the Message Boards?

What does the asterick (*) on either side of a word refer to on the Message Boards?
Since underlining is difficult on these message boards and ALL CAPS GETS A LITTLE RUDE after a while, I think people just use them to *emphasize* certain words(!) Or did you see it used in another way?
