What are the negatives for I Bonds?

The plus is the inflation protection. Since you want to keep them for more than five years the inflation benefit is good.

The negative is they may pay less than other fixed income investments. Compare to muni's even if you go to a full service broker. Corporate bonds maybe better depending on your tax rate.

I think I would put at least some of my "five year" money in the bonds due to the inflation protection.
