What Philadelphia did was not irrelevant, i.e. reinstating the mandate. They are stupid to rescind it. They are being reactive, not proactive. It is bad policy, and also reduces public confidence in their officials.

I couldn't agree more. And I expect more of the same around the country over the next few weeks.

Meanwhile, I glanced at the data in today's NY Times.

Over the past 14 days:

                    New Cases Hospitalizations
United States +52% +1%
Pennsylvania +71% +13%
Philadelphia +76% Flat

I realize that this is an imperfect way of assessing the spread of Covid. But it
tells me that we're "not out of the woods."

Will Philadelphia be saying "Nevermind" again in a few weeks? Of course the consequences
of the already-in-progress wave are not known. But let's say that Covid just "disappears."
Do you think that will happen?

Let's say that this is the start of yet another nasty wave. What then? I think that things
will be exacerbated because the public is confused. More so than in the past. And fed up.

Anything other than a very mild wave is going to generate a huge wave of nasty public reaction.
