When buying a mutual fund in a brokerage account, transaction fees are not unusual. Your choices are these: 1) find another index fund that your brokerage is willing to provide for lower transaction fees, 2) buy SPY on the AMEX--same index, but stock commissions, not transaction fees, or 3) move your account to Vanguard (or another mutual fund company) where you will not be charged transaction fees.

Its all a matter of choosing a method and custodian that is consistent with you future investment plans. Investigate before you decide.
