When Kamala was born most states required anyone with any African ancestry to list themselves as Black or Negro. Some moved away from family and would build a life seperated from their family. There is one case of twin sisters. One stayed in the community where they were born and lived as an African American, another moved to another state, lived her life a white woman and did not see any of her family for many years.
Until the 60s most states and some federal loan programs enforced segregated communities. In the South they were called Jim Crow laws, in other stated their were red lines drawn on the map where blacks could not rent or buy property. In Europe the Jews lived in ghettos I believe, maybe other races as well.
