When you have real little critters (a baby on the way, e.g.), the minivan is handy for putting them in their seats. If it's a driving rainstorm, you can hop in with them and buckle them up (depending on how you have the 2nd row or 3rd row seats arranged). I usually took out the 2nd row and put them in the 3rd.

When they're bigger, and they can climb in on their own, a station wagon is handy (lower than a minivan or SUV). I'd suggest a Volvo V70/850 wagon, which is larger than a Camry, and they're known for being able to be driven with high miles.
