TSGT J.B. Merchant worked in the orderly room of the 6984th Security Squadron on Shemya (the second to last inhabited island in the Aleutian chain) in 1972-73. While out-processing from the Alaska theatre at Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage I was surprised to run into J.B. Merchant again. J.B. had volunteered to RETURN to our Aleutian Alcatraz & Alcohol paradise (I would not see as many Al's in the same sentence again until "All Al All the Time" news coverage after the 2000 presidential election).

J.B. Merchant was not nuts. He was the best card player on the island. He would carry around a briefcase containing over a thousand dollars in search of the next gambling session. J.B. considered his alternative futures and hired himself a body guard for protection. J.B. probably made more money on that island than anyone else below the rank of Colonel.

J.B. Merchant was from Cincinnati, Ohio. It was his intention to open a bowling alley after he retired from the Air Force. Does anybody out there know where J.B. Merchant is?
