I recently posted a similar question on another board, one person suggested I also post here.

I am about two years away from retirement from the fire department. My wife is a certified nurse midwife. She has the type of training that allows her to work nearly anywhere she chooses. We still have a school aged child in the house who will be in high school when I retire. We are not wealthy, but we have been foolishly wise.

Where would be a good place to live? We enjoy the sun, but don't mind cold weather or snow. We just hate long stretches of gloomy days with alternating days of snow / slush / rain / slush / etc. From my description, could you tell we live in Central Ohio?

Mountains are fine with us. We don't ski but we could learn.

Schools (public or parochial) are important, as is safety, recreation, general quality of life.

I've heard mention of Boise ID, Phoenix AZ, Boulder CO, Colorado Springs CO, Fort Collins, CO, Santa Barba, CA, Ashville NC, Berkely CA, Easton MD, and others. I am looking to you, fellow fools, for more ideas for our shopping list. Please help.

Thanks, Harley01
