While I agree with your premise, chalking it all up to greed may be a bit harsh. Maybe. A bit. I wrote a similar comment a few years back when they discontinued the Feste award.

The Fool's original premise was that ordinary folks could outperform the "Wise" in the market. I think they were probably right. Unfortunately, it wasn't the greatest business model. Free boards and low cost seminars weren't going to keep them afloat long-term.

So they went over to the dark side and joined the Wise. Mutual funds, paid subscriptions, etc, etc. I have mixed feelings about that but it's kept them in business. Fortunately, the free community is still a stellar source of investing info and for that I'm thankful. I do miss the Feste Award, though.
