Who wonders how much the novelty of South America will play in the decision or will it be cold hard cash...

Rio has bid on this several times before. They tried very hard in 2004 and 2012 but were unsuccessful because they simply do not have the level of infrastructure needed.

This time, they are hoping to get a better result since Brazil is hosting the World Cup in 2014. So they are saying that a lot of new infrastructure will be added for this.

IMO, Rio has basically no shot at hosting the Olympics. I think Madrid has an excellent shot. And since Spain last hosted the Olympics in 1992, it is possible this would set up the United States as a more serious contender for the 2020 games.
