Why are you so stingy? Why are you so mean of spirit? Why can't we have, in this nation which is rich among rich nations, a universal single-payer healthcare system in which we look after our own?

Because wherever it's been tried it doesn't work very well. Look at what's happening in France right now. They're trying to solve their unemployment problem (23% among young people) by making it easier for employers to fire people in the first two years of work. Otherwise employers don't want to hire anyone because they'll be stuck with them for life even if they're bad employees.

How is that related to health care? It's part of the huge entitlement mentality that health care ends up being part of in socialist and semi-socialist countries. French health care is "free" but really it comes out of very high taxes people pay, which contributes to their economic stagnation and high unemployment.

Last year a Canadian sued his own province because he had to wait too long for medical treatment and they wouldn't let him go outside the system. The Canadian supreme court ruled in his favor, saying that their health care system was a danger to Canadians and that universal access to a waiting list was not the same thing as access to actual care.

Universal health care sounds nice but it will end up with rationing, waiting lists and poorer quality of care as the best and brightest turn to other careers rather than become government drones. It's already beginning to happen because of Medicare and insurance companies.

You shouldn't be so quick to call others greedy because they don't believe your version of utopia has a hope of succeeding, especially as it hasn't worked out so well elsewhere--resulting either in lower quality of care or wider negative effects on the societies where it exists. Holding hands and singing Kumbaya feels good but you really don't want your kids and the kids of your friends to have a 25% chance of never finding work, as the price of your big nanny-state programs, do you?

Agree about the earmarks, though.
