Why is Apple on the wrong side of this?

Sorry, I have to side with Apple on this one. Apple is on the side of high quality and being sensible about backing up things you care about.

High quality means ignoring repairability. Apple attempts to make stuff as recyclable as possible, so there's no reason not to just get something new. And they make things do their job as effectively as possible, which often results in them being hard to repair. In a world of limited resources, rather than serving the few who screw up they choose to serve the many by making screwing up much less likely.

Pretty much all of this wailing over lost stuff comes down to failure to do backups. Apple has made great efforts to make backups easy and even invisible, but people still don't do them. Then they complain when stuff is lost. Too bad.

(and yes, I've lost stuff through being stupid)
