Why not just invest in a nice index fund and leave your money there for the long haul?

That's pretty much what I do. My 401K is 100% in a S&P 500 index fund. In my Roth, I have been dollar-cost averaging (sorry Nick) into Dodge&Cox Stock Fund. In my wife's, I have been dollar-cost averaging into Dodge&Cox balanced fund. Starting in January, I am planning to stop contributing to these funds (but leave the money in them) and start buying into the Vanguard Small Cap Index fund in my Roth and the Vanguard REIT Fund in my wife's Roth. I was just wondering if there may be better options.
