Here's an interesting article which describes some new software which will allow retailers to gather information on purchases, etc from all kinds of devices (cash registers, handheld devices, including phones).,4164,2622946,00.html

Beyond illustrating a practical application for wireless technology, the article raises interesting points concerning integration of online and offline purchasing for retailers.

There is also an interesting point raised with reference to one of the scenarios presented: If you provide someone with the freedom to simply walk into a shop, pick up an item, scan it on your phone which charges the purchase to your credit card, that person can then walk out of the store without interacting with a cashier or a clerk. How do you know they are not a shoplifter?

Possibly if the security system gets a confirmation from the central processing unit but that represents another change to the infrastructure of the shop space...
