By the way, I agree completely that your retirement home should be just what you want, if possible!

We're retired, and have been for several years now, and we love our home here on the mountain. Our peaceful "family room" area (which was once a living room of sorts) is just off the master bedroom on the first floor, so we can just toddle off to bed whenm we feel like it, after TV or whatever. This room has a picture window view of the mountains to the west and the woods below, and also has cozy wood panelling throughout, plus a good working woodstove set into a stone fireplace-like setting. Next, the kitchen (recently redone by the previous owners) offers all we can possibly need; then the dining room; and finally the new addition we put on, with the new foyer, powder room and large living room.

The living room has French doors at one end and a big, 10-foot high Palladian window at the other, with cathedral ceilings and built-in speakers for the FM/CD/stereo system. It was a LOT of hard work, and took us over a year, but now it's a lovely place to entertain or to just sit and enjoy the bliss of the music and/or views outside, any season of the year! By the way, we had radiant heating installed under all the floors in the addition, and we love that, too! (It's nice to walk into that foyer and feel the warmth of heated tiles under your feet, when it's snowy and maybe 10 degrees outside!) You may want to look into radiant heat; we've found it reasonably efficient vs the existing baseboard heat (all oil-fired) in the rest of the house, too.

I wish you luck. We believe that retirement should be a time of joy, whatever your own "joy" may be.
