Go for it! We finished a major addition here two years ago, and we love it. (We sold our former home and budgeted about half the profit to do the addition and used the rest to pay off half of what remained of the mortgage on this place.)

We DID do quite a bit ourselves -- all electrical work, insulation, building the porch (with railings, etc.), inside painting, trim, wainscoting in the new powder room, and even the cereamic tiles in the foyer and powder room (which my wife helped me with).

However, we also were our own general contractors, though we also listened to our main guy, who was a friend and trusted person locally. He never steered us wrong, and we appreciated his help along the way!

Actually, our next big project is to totally redo the master bathroom, too, but that will involve demolition and considerable cost, so we're king of working up to it!

Good luck!
