Some may remember extremely long threads on Covid19 that depended a lot on infection/death data from the Worldometer site.

There are now questions about the accuracy of the data from https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/ . Equally troubling is that the ownership and management of that site is a bit of a mystery.

"The website claims to be “run by an international team of developers, researchers, and volunteers” and “published by a small and independent digital media company based in the United States.” But public records show little evidence of a company that employs a multilingual team of analysts and researchers. It’s not clear whether the company has paid staff vetting its data for accuracy or whether it relies solely on automation and crowdsourcing. The site does have at least one job posting, from October, seeking a volunteer web developer." https://www.cnn.com/interactive/2020/05/world/worldometer-co...

The web is a wonderful thing, but due diligence is needed before depending too much on the information one finds. Particularly with Covid19, where countries differ tremendously in how they report info on the disease. Buyer beware!

Apparently, even Wikipedia has assessed Worldometer Covid data as unreliable:

"That unreliability, and Worldometer’s anonymous team of analysts with little to no accountability, led to even Wikipedia’s editors refusal to permit the use of Worldometer as a reliable source on coronavirus-related pages. https://www.scotsman.com/health/coronavirus-worldometer-data...
