You're question really has me thinking. I would have thought that AAA rated bonds required NO investigation on the part of the buyer. (Except for callabilty, price, and return on investment.)

I bought quite a few 5 year to maturity bonds at the beginning of the year with AA rating. Felt quite comfortable accepting the rating services assessment of the ability of the corporations to pay the debt back.
