Letter notes the labor problem in Japan caused by declining birth rates and unfavorable immigration policies. Some think they will be leaders in developing robots to fill the need. News reports tell of some softening of regulations to encourage some immigration.

Letter writer notes that another solution is keeping older workers longer. Give them incentives to stay on the job longer and discourage early retirement.

Apparently this is already happening in Japan. And it fits nicely with their traditional values.

It would probably work in the US too. But it would mean a big change in an era when buy out packages have become the norm.
