Yes, under "pure" deregulation there will be upstart service providers much like we have seen for long distance and, now, local telephone service and ISPs. And, I guess, in PA you already have that for electricity. Hmmmmm, I haven't heard anything about blackouts in PA.

The gorilla in my section of PA (Northwest, Erie) was Pennelec, which was acquired or morphed into GPU. I don't believe generation was affected by deregulation, we were just offered choices as to who's name appeared on the bill. I wasn't comfortable with names like "Frank's Fine Megawatt Wholesalers", so I stuck with GPU.

And no, there haven't been any shortages of power that I know of; perhaps because of our proximity to Canada, and to New York (Niagara-Mohawk.)
