Yesterday we ate with a couple who also participate in the ship’s duplicate bridge game. It turned out that, earlier, they had been diagnosed with COVID and quarantined for ten days. They were released a couple of weeks ago. He still tests positive and they have not been permitted to leave the ship in French Polynesia and, frankly, I don’t know if that means he is contagious.

PCR tests will show positive well after someone is contagious. The rapid COVID tests are less sensitive. The rapid COVID tests are good at showing if someone is contagious but are less reliable at predicting if someone will become contagious later.

We had a small family gathering recently. The person who had a recent known close contact with COVID had a negative PCR test from three days before and did a rapid test before the gathering. Both were negative and he felt safe about attending. There were at risk individuals present who are unable (not anti-vax) to be vaccinated therefore the additional caution.
