Very interesting. We are now cleared to move into a continuing care facility. So it looks like we will be entering a spend down phase of our "fortunes." As one who has worked for 60 years trying to increase our fortunes, the change of mental attitude is proving difficult. I have sold enough assets to raise the entry fee of $206,000 which almost made me cry. I know you are not supposed to fall in love with stocks, but when I sold our 3M, it was sort of like losing a child. It has raised its dividend every year for more than 50 yrs and proves capable of continuing to do so, but that is true of nearly all common stocks we own. I've always owned 100 sh of 3M, it seems. Occasionally they have had a stock split, and I sold all but the 100 shares. Our basis was very small. I cannot reconstruct now why I chose 3M to be one of the things sold among quite a few (say rather than PG of which we have quite a bit), but some things have to go. Yet while I survey what we have left, and the entry fee was a small part of the total, I am satisfied that we have a good selection that should help slow the drawdown. Our biggest holding by far will continue to be Genuine Parts Corp (GPC). Incidentally both PG and GPS also have increased their dividend for more than 50 yrs.

We are in the process of gifting our home to the oldest son and the summer cottage to the youngest son (curiously, the apprasal value of the two are very close - lake front vs no lakefront will do that to you.). I will find out on the 28th if this can get done before the end of the year.
