You don't need the www. I can't think of a single website that actually requires the w's.

There are actually probably plenty of them that still do, because their main website isn't configured properly (obviously mainly small sites). However, if you leave off the "www." [e.g, "" and the browser can't find that server (which would happen in that case), modern browsers will then automatically look for "".
