You get what you pay for.

Headsets are made for phone calls. If you're recording, you need something that's made for the task.

If you want to stay in the USB realm, try one of these:

Something like the Blue Snowball would be easy to use. BSW sells it for $99; Sam's Club sells it online for $75.

BSW also sells a podcast starter package with a USB audio mixer, Audio Technica mic (it's on the low end of the pro scale, but it's good enough for broadcast) mic stand, cables, and how-to book. It's $250. http://www.bswusa.com/proditem.asp?item=PODCAST-STARTER Plug in a pair of headphones to the mixer and you can hear what you're doing as you record.

The one advantage here is the Alesis mixer in the BSW package connects to the computer via USB, effectively becoming another sound card.

Or, you could get the same mic in that package with a USB interface for $150 and skip the mixer: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Audio-Technica-AT2020-USB-Conden...
